After studying at the La Rochelle Conservatory with Colette Milner and graduating with the Gold Medal from the French Conservatories, Sébastien Mari began his career in 1989 at Robert Berthier’s Jeune Ballet de France before moving to the Nederlands Dans Theater with Jiri Kylian. He later danced with the Spanish National Dance Company, directed by Nacho Duato, and was part of the Gulbenkian Ballet (Portugal) directed by Iracity Cardoso and Paulo Ribeiro.
During these years he danced numerous pieces from the classical repertoire and from choreographers such as Nacho Duato, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Ohad Naharin, Hans Van Manen, Mauro Bigonzetti, Claude Brumachon, Stijn Celis, Marie Chouinard, Patrick Delcroix, Nicolo Fonte , Itzik Galili, Cesc Gelabert, Patrick de Bana, Hervé Jourdet, Nadine Hernu, Rui Horta, Amanda Miller, Martino Müller, Angelin Preljocaj, Paulo Ribeiro, Enrique Rodovalho, Yvonice Satie, Paul Selwyn-Norton, Patricia Tuerling and Didy Veldman. He then spent five years working as a dancer and assistant on various independent projects by creators Peter Agardi, Patricia Alzetta, Kader Belarbi, Caroline Bo, Guillaume Bordier, Carolina Constantinou, Jeanette Damant, Pieter De Ruiter, Laurence Fanon, Julien Ficely, Jennifer Hanna , Nanine Linning, Sabine Linz, Nicolas Musin, Sebastian Edward Nichita, Giuliano Peparini, Redha, Richard Siegal, Saburo Teshigawara, Pascal Touzeau, Nathalie Tournaire and Regina Van Berkel.
From 2009 to 2014, Sébastien was part of the Mainz Ballet (Germany) under the direction of Pascal Touzeau, first as a soloist dancer in numerous choreographies by Pascal Touzeau, William Forsythe and since 2011 as coordinator, ballet master and rehearsal director for Davy Brun, Johan Inger, Jiri Kylian, Douglas Lee, Ohad Naharin, Georg Reischl, Pascal Touzeau, Didy Veldman.
Since 2014, Sébastien Mari, as a repeat teacher and international assistant, has been invited to teach his technique at: Ballet de Genève, Basel ballett, Basel Ballettschule and Sankt Gallen Tanz in Switzerland; in Germany at Theater Chemnitz, Ballett Koblenz, Ballet Saarbrucken, Theater Regensburg Tanz, Theater Nordhausen, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Tanztheater Münster; as assistant to Bridget Breiner at the Ballett im Revier, Tarek Assam at Tanztheater Giessen and Pascal Touzeau for Oedipus, at Introdans and for Henny Jurriëns Stichting at the Korzo Theater, Netherlands. He has also attended and performed with Justin Peck in Paris and has taught workshops and classes in Italy, Dance Faculty of Art, Accademia Nazionale di Roma, Art Factory International; at the National Conservatory of La Rochelle and at the Ballet du Rhin (France); in Russia at the Moscow Ballet; in Spain at Campus Adam, Valencia EnDanza, in Catalonia at the Institut del Teatre, ARDance Internacional Dance Program by Esmeralda Maycas, Center de Dansa de Catalunya by Roser Muñoz and Joan Boix, at La Companyia, Obrador de Moviments, IBstage (artistic director) , IEA Oriol Martorell, APDC, El Casinet and Thomas Noone Dance.
He has traced different works such as 7’8 by Georg Reischl; A sweet Spell of Oblivion by David Dawson; Daybreak by Pontus Lidberg for Ballet Im Revier; In Honor of by Bridget Breiner for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. Since 2018 he has been the exclusive assistant of choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen for his new creations Open Space with the Ballett Im Revier, Dancehall with the Moscow Ballet, Firebird with the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Sleeping Beauty for the Leipziger Ballett, La Fille mal Gardée with the Basel Ballett , Amor & Psyche with the Tanz Theater Mannheim.
From her own experience with a variety of training methods such as Yoga, Gyrotonics and Alexander Technique and, thanks to what she learned from the ballet teachers she worked with in her career, she has developed a useful and effective ballet class teaching system. challenging for professional dancers both ballet and contemporary. He also offers workshops to improve improvisation and movement knowledge. This technique serves to boost creativity and choreographic skills, as well as stylistic skills. Sébastien Mari speaks fluent French, English, Spanish and Portuguese, and is proficient in Catalan, German and Dutch. He has a diploma in Interior Design. In addition to his passion for dance, his interests encompass aerial acrobatics, urban art, architecture, sculpture and psychology.
