Ballet Nacional de Cuba

The Cuban version of Don Quixote has been acclaimed by the public and international critics, as it has been staged in a dignified and serious way, the figure of the central character: the Hidalgo Señor Don Quixote de la Mancha, which in other versions has been treated in a minimized way, without showing its true relevance as a leading character.

The National Ballet of Cuba is one of the most prestigious dance companies in the world and occupies a prominent place in contemporary Hispanic American culture. It was founded in 1948 by Prima Ballerina Soluta Alicia Alonso and in 1959 it changed its name from Ballet de Alicia Alonso to Ballet Nacional de Cuba, when a new stage for Cuban ballet began and the company was reorganized.

The artistic line of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba is based on respect for the romantic and classical tradition, while stimulating the creative work of choreographers who follow a line of national and contemporary research. Currently, Cuban Viengsay Valdés is the company's principal dancer and director.

The plot - taken from the second volume of Cervantes' novel - centers on the love story between Kitri and Basil. The young woman's father opposes this union, preferring his daughter to marry the wealthy Camacho. The noble knight Don Quixote, encouraged by the novels of chivalry, and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, will help the two young lovers to be united in marriage.
